Optimum drinking water hygiene despite irregular use NürnbergMesse (DE)

The sanitary installations in Hall 12 at NürnbergMesse had seen better days. Everything needed to be replaced, from the toilets and urinals to the actuator plates and piping.

Fluctuating visitor numbers and extreme variations in use are critical factors for efficient building management and safe, reliable drinking water hygiene. Anke Klein, the technical building management expert who planned the renovation on behalf of the exhibition organisers, opted for Geberit Connect as the ideal solution. With its turbulent flow, Geberit Connect achieves a complete water replacement in the piping system.

The refurbished facility was ready for operation in time for the Nürnberg International Toy Fair 2024. With Geberit Connect, operators can now rely on a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for managing the sanitary installations on the exhibition site. Feedback from the customer has been positive.

Project overview

Irregular use

The biggest challenge when planning sanitary installations at an exhibition centre comes from the significant fluctuations in user frequency.

Complete water replacement

A key requirement was the turbulent flushing of all pipelines and sanitary appliances for a complete water replacement.

Optimisation and monitoring

Maintenance and cleaning had to be optimised based on visitor frequency, and operation needed to be easy to monitor.

Geberit Connect solution

Geberit Connect meets the customer’s requirement for centralised operation and comprehensive monitoring of the installation.

Customer testimonial

Anke Klein, Managing Director, SK+TGM GmbH

“We hadn’t heard of Geberit Connect before but we were supported by Geberit throughout the entire planning and construction process. Geberit Connect allows us to ensure that all end devices flush at the same time. We couldn’t do that with any other system.”

The brief To maintain drinking water quality despite irregular use

The biggest challenge of sanitary planning for an exhibition centre comes from the significant fluctuations in user frequency. Event days see thousands of visitors make use of the sanitary facilities, after which some halls stand empty for weeks. The location of Hall 12 means it is rarely occupied, leading to irregular use of its sanitary facilities.

As a result, the goals defined for the renovation of the sanitary installations in Hall 12 were clear:

  • Ensure consistently high drinking water quality
  • Create logs for use and flushes
  • Optimise cleaning and maintenance processes
  • Facilitate monitoring and control of sanitary appliances
  • Monitor and log volumetric flow rates and temperatures in the supply network

A requirement of sanitary engineer Anke Klein was the ability for all sanitary appliances to be flushed simultaneously to ensure drinking water quality despite infrequent use.

The Geberit solution Connecting sanitary appliances with Geberit Connect

Central operation of the end devices via Geberit Gateway

Geberit Connect technology is used to connect sanitary appliances, enabling comprehensive and economical management of the sanitary installation.

Central operation via Geberit Gateway

Hall 12 in the west wing of NürnbergMesse is a terminal facility that gets its water via a supply pipe. The electronic flush systems here for the toilets, urinals and washbasin taps were connected to two Geberit Gateways via a GEBUS cable. Up to 30 end devices are connected to each of the two Geberit Gateways in use. The Geberit Gateways provide operators with full, centralised control over all sanitary rooms.
With support from Geberit, Anke Klein developed a concept that divides the sanitary rooms in the exhibition hall into different zones and distributes them to the Gateways. All connected end devices, such as the WC flush controls, urinals and taps, can be centrally operated, adjusted and read out from the Geberit Gateway via the Geberit Control app app.

Creation of a turbulent flush

To create a turbulent flow, all end devices are flushed simultaneously using a time-controlled flushing programme.

Password-protected

The Geberit Gateway allows for time-efficient and secure control of the facilities. Geberit Gateways are password-protected and can only be programmed centrally. The Bluetooth connection allows facility managers to access data from each flushing device on-site whenever needed.

No additional feed lines

No additional electrical wiring is required for the washbasins and urinals, as these are powered directly via the GEBUS cable from the Geberit Gateway.

Direct power for controlling the Geberit Brenta deck-mounted tap is supplied by GEBUS cable via a Geberit Gateway.

Optimised cleaning and maintenance

The collection of usage data allows NürnbergMesse to optimise both the cleaning and maintenance of its sanitary installations. The sanitary appliances are flushed centrally via the Geberit Gateway. Problems can be identified and checked by facility managers via the Geberit Control app.

Monitoring of temperatures and volume flows

The GEBUS temperature and volumetric flow rate sensor records the sensor values in the main pipe. The Gateway provides a log that facilitates both monitoring and further optimisation of the facility.
