Centrally operated hygiene flush units for drinking water Dialysis centre in Heidenheim (DE)

2024 saw the opening of a brand-new dialysis centre in Heidenheim, Germany. The ground floor is fully equipped for dialysis treatments, while three further floors offer 45 apartments of around 25 m² for Heidenheim Clinic staff. The project was handled by Essinger Wohnbau GmbH.

To meet the increased requirements for drinking water hygiene, the supply installation was designed to include a Geberit HS50 hygiene flush in every apartment on the top floor to ensure regular water replacement throughout the entire living area. The advantage of having the hygiene flush units connected via Geberit Connect is that they can be controlled without any coordination with the residents. This means the facility manager can now adjust the settings of the hygiene flush units centrally from the technology room and read out device information and flush logs as required.

Project overview

High demands in the healthcare sector

Guaranteed drinking water quality, even with temporary use.

One hygiene flush unit per apartment

A Geberit HS50 hygiene flush unit was installed in each apartments on the top floor.

No schedule coordination required

With Geberit Connect, there is no need to coordinate schedules with residents who work day and night shifts.

Geberit Connect solution

The centralised operation means operators no longer require access to each apartment.

Customer testimonial

Maximilian Nudig, Site Manager, Essinger Wohnbau GmbH

“The advantage of this solution is that all hygiene flush units can be managed from a single central location. This means the facility manager can now access all read-outs and documentation in one place, without the need to make appointments with tenants.

The brief To operate and read out devices without making appointments

Apartments for Heidenheim Clinic employees

High standards for drinking water quality are especially crucial in the healthcare system. The new dialysis centre at the Heidenheim Clinic offers a comfortable treatment space for patients on the ground floor, while the three floors above have been converted into 25 m² apartments for the new employees of the clinic.

This meant the sanitary engineers were faced with the challenge of designing the supply pipes to ensure that the drinking water quality was maintained even with irregular use of the apartments.

By looping the supply pipes, a Geberit hygiene flush unit could be fitted in each apartment on the top floor, making for a total of 18 Geberit HS50 hygiene flush units.

The operator wanted the ability to operate and read out this high number of hygiene flush units independently, given that the residents work shifts and have irregular schedules.

Operating the hygiene flush units in the dialysis area would have disrupted the workflow.

The Geberit solution Connecting the hygiene flush units with Geberit Connect

Operation of all hygiene flush units via the Geberit Control app on the Geberit Gateway
  • The Geberit hygiene flush units were connected to a Geberit Gateway, which is installed in the control room, via GEBUS cables. The facility manager always has access to this room. Geberit Gateway and GEBUS are components of Geberit Connect – the innovative platform for the connectivity and operation of sanitary appliances.
  • The hygiene flush units were set to the ‘Interval’ flush mode to flush the drinking water pipes every 72 hours.
  • All events and flushes are logged and saved on a Geberit Gateway. The mobile Geberit Control app provides facility managers with access to all hygiene flush units at all times. This allows them to export the logs as required and provide evidence of regular flushing, saving both time and effort.
  • The Geberit Gateway notifies users of any errors and warnings. If one of the hygiene flush units stops working, the facility manager receives an email alert and can rectify the fault promptly. Firmware updates can be carried out directly via the cloud.
  • Geberit piping systems, actuator plates, washbasins and toilets, along with Geberit Huter installation systems, were installed in the prefabricated bathrooms to meet the high hygiene and functionality requirements of the dialysis centre.
